The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven is celebrated on August 15th. As the Mother of Jesus, the Only Begotten Son of God, and having been preserved from the stain of sin, Mary, like Jesus, was resurrected by God to eternal life. Mary was the first, after Christ, to experience resurrection. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a dogma of faith. Our Lady of the Assumption was the first fruit of the celestial Church and a sign of consolation and hope for the pilgrim church. This is because Mary's Assumption is an anticipation of the resurrection of the flesh, which will take place at the end of time for all other men, with the last Judgement.
